Strawberry, fig, almond, chia seed smoothie

This smoothie has a fresh, sweet and round taste. Perfect to start the day with or as a snack between meals.
This drink is full of vitamins C, K and E, iron, potassium, calcium and fiber.

I like juices and smoothies for which I can always can have the ingredients at home for, because they either come from the freezer or are dried.

Antioxidant and stimulus drink

Antioxidants is a collective name for various substances such as vitamins C and E, zinc and chromium. They can help against substances that are harmful to you, also called free radicals. With a normal diet you should get enough antioxidants. If you ever have a day or period where you eat less fruit and vegetables, a healthy smoothie can be a nice addition.

But did you know that you can also get too many antioxidants? Then you disrupt the balance between free radicals and antioxidants in your body. That is why it is good not to just take supplements of this.

Ingredients for this strawberry, fig, almond and chia smoothie

  • 10 (frozen) strawberries
  • 2 soaked dried figs plus 1/3 cup soaking water
  • 1/3 cup almond milk
  • 1 dstspn chia seeds plus 1/3 cup soaking water
  • optional: splash of lemon

Preparation figs and chia seeds

Soak the figs and chia seeds overnight.

Homemade or processed almond milk?

Making almond milk yourself is quite easy, but it does take some work.
Easier is to buy ready-made one. However, note that some processed almond milk can contain additives. Best is to choose for unsweetened and unflavored almond milk

Alternative for almond milk

You can replace the almond milk for any kind of milk or water.

Dried or fresh figs?

Instead of dried figs you can also use fresh ones. The juice will be less sweet then. Dried figs contain more calories, dietary fiber, sugar, vitamins and minerals. Fresh figs have more vitamin C, A and beta-carotene

Directions for the blender or food processor:

  • Add all ingredients, including the soaking water, in the jar.  
  • Mix for a  minute or two, till all is smooth.
  • Add some lemon juice for a more sour and fresh twist and ice cubes.

    If you find the juice too thick, you can add some (almond) milk or water.

Some nutrition facts and benefits of strawberries, figs, almond milk and chia seeds

Strawberries have a high level of antioxidants, and fiber. They are a great source of vitamin C, folate, manganese and potassium. And they lower your blood pressure and increase HDL (good) cholesterol

Figs are high in iron, vitamin K, and have high fiber content. They support digestive health and your immune system and it is believed they have anti-inflammatory, anticancer, fat-lowering, cell-producing and antioxidant properties.

Almond milk is a great source for vitamin E and contains calcium, Vitamin D and B2, potassium, magnesium, phosphorus and manganese. It contains just as much protein as cow’s milk.

Chia seeds are loaded with antioxidants, full of fiber, protein, omega-3 fatty acids, manganese, magnesium, phosphorus and calcium. They are also a good source for zinc, Vitamin B3, B1, B2 and potassium.

How long can you store this fresh drink?

Personally I like the smoothie best when drunk immediately.
But you can keep it in de fridge up to 48 hours.

It is also possible to freeze a smoothie. Then don’t forget to keep some space at the top of the glass or jar for expansion while freezing.
Freezing a smoothie does not destroy the minerals, vitamins or fibers.
And the taste does not decrease either.
