Make your own healthy fruit and vegetable juice

Making your own healthy and very tasty drinks may take a little more time, but once you get the hang of it, it will become part of your (new) lifestyle with more conscious and healthier food and beverage

Detox kidney and stimulate liver juice

It is said that this juice is very good for the kidneys and the liver.
With the recipe below, you can experiment which ratio of the vegetable and fruits you like best.

Due to the strong cleaning character of the beet, start with a little, a quarter to a third medium-sized root, going easy until your system gets accustomed to the effects.

The juice is also very tasty without the beets when you do not like the taste too much, but then you miss the benefits beets have for you.

Ingredients

  • 2 – 3 carrots (medium to big ones)
  • 2 apples
  • 1/4 – 1/2 beetroot
  • 1 cm of ginger

Over time you can add more beetroot and have for example the ratio:

  • 1 carrot
  • 1 apple
  • 1 cm of ginger
  • 1/2 beet ( building up to 1)

Directions

  • Wash apple, carrot and beet (Peel if desired).
  • Cut apple into medium pieces and remove the core.
  • Cut carrot and beet into medium pieces
  • Slow juicer: add pieces of apple, carrot, beet and ginger into the juicer.

Slow juicer or food processor

With a slow juicer you crush the vegetable and fruits into juice. The pulp is separated in a loose container. With a food processor the drink remains thick as the pulp is not filtered out.

Directions when you don’t have a (slow) juicer

Pour ¾ cup water in a blender jar, food processor or mixer grinder jar.  Add apples, add carrot and ginger. Blend till smooth puree in the blender. Line a cheesecloth or a large fine mesh over an empty large bowl and pour prepared puree over it. Gather all sides of the cloth towards upward and squeeze to get the maximum juice out of the pulp. Discard the fibrous pulp, or use it later for soup or sauce, for example.

Some nutrition facts and benefits of Beetroot, carrot, apple and ginger

Beets help reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, aiding brain function, and stabilizing mood. Minerals in beets include calcium, potassium, iron, copper, and sodium.
Carrots are like beetroot rich in antioxidants. They have healing properties that not only restore your body from within, they also help heal wounds on the skin and fight infections. In addition, carrots also slow down the skin aging process and reduce acne and blemishes.
Apples are able to break down toxins, lower cholesterol, and enhance digestion. They have vitamin A (in the peel), vitamin C, potassium and antioxidants (like quercetin)
Ginger, also rich in antioxidants,  has warming effects and gives a juice a nice kick. It promotes healthy sweating, beneficial to the cleansing process and fantastic for battling colds and flu. Thereby ginger reduces bloating while stimulating the colon.

How long can you store a fresh juice?

Easily you can store  it in de fridge up to 48 hours.

Fresh juice in the freezer.

If you make quite some juice, you can keep the glasses or jars in the freezer.
Don’t forget to keep some room at the top of the glass or jar for expansion while freezing

Freezing a fresh juice does not destroy the minerals, vitamins or enzymes.
And the flavor does not decrease either.
It seems you can store the drinks up to 3 months without degrading the nutrition or the flavor. Some say it can be even up to 6 months

Does a fresh juice boost your immune system?

When you eat a healthy and varied diet, you generally get enough vitamins and minerals.
Depending how your diet looks like, a fresh juice can help to get extra nutrients.
To have a good immune system, you also need to exercise regularly.
A good night’s sleep and little stress also contribute

What to do with the pulp:

-Soup and sauce: put aside pulp of that ingredient you want to use for soup or a sauce.
-Pet food: I add carrot and apple first into the juicer. This pulp I put aside, to add to boil few minutes in some water with sometimes bit of coconut oil.  I never add the beetroot, although a bit might be fine for dogs. Ginger is not!
