What is a healthy lifestyle

What is a healthy lifestyle?

Healthy food, a good night’s sleep, enough exercise, not too much stress … we all know that this is good for our health.
Having a healthy lifestyle sounds simple, but what exactly is it and what does it include?

What is the meaning of lifestyle?

Lifestyle is about treating lifestyle-related disorders and preventing health problems.
Lifestyle-related disorders are disorders that are partly caused by the way we live and eat: unhealthy and eating too much, too little exercise, not enough or bad sleep and chronic stress.
Our body cannot deal with this in the long run.
If we have a stressful life, for example, pressure from the outside and pressure we impose on ourselves, it can affect our lifestyle; such as no more time to do some exercise, having an extra drink to calm down, a quick unhealthy bite, etc.

Do you have no disorder and no stress? Lovely!
But even then it is good to take a closer look at your lifestyle in order to work in a preferential way and that you stay as healthy as you are now.

What are lifestyle-related disorders and diseases?

Lifestyle plays an important role in many diseases of affluence, such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, cancer and cardiovascular diseases. But also asthma, eczema, high blood pressure, stomach and intestinal complaints, migraine, high cholesterol, are disorders that can be alleviated or can even be reversed with a healthier lifestyle.

We sometimes do not realize that there is a great connection between lifestyle and certain disorders. Of course sometimes medicines are really necessary, but in non-life-threatening situations, sometimes medications don’t always deliver what they promise. They may suppress the symptoms of ailment, but they do not eliminate the cause of the complaint.

Is a healthy lifestyle really something of today?

Lifestyle may seem like a new hype now, but it is actually the basis of our medicine.Already in the time of Hippocrates it was used to prevent and treat diseases and conditions. And every current doctor now takes an oath at the end of his or her studies: “I will implement living and dietary measures for the benefit of the sick, to the best of my knowledge and judgment. I will protect them from harm and injustice. “

This sometimes just seems to have been forgotten. This may be due to the fact that less attention is paid to this in the study programs. In addition, the use of medicines seems easier and faster.
Fortunately, more and more doctors are more aware of the importance of good nutrition and lifestyle.
Again, medicines are often indispensable, absolutely. And in some cases also life-saving. You cannot cure some diseases and conditions with only changes in diet and lifestyle,  because, for example, they are caused by predisposition or that genes have an influence.

A good healthy lifestyle does not mean that you never get sick.
However, it can reduce the chance and contribute to recovery.

Scientific evidence of good nutrition

There is plenty of evidence that high blood pressure, heart disease and diabetes can be reversed through proper nutrition. However, there are also many things that have not been scientifically proven, because a nutrition study among large groups of people is very difficult to carry out. For example, you cannot do a double-blind study because you do not have placebo kale.

How can I eat and live (more) healthy?

To summarize it in just a few sentences: eating healthy is not just about some types of ‘superfoods’, but about a full-fledged diet with lots of fruit and vegetables, nuts, seeds, fatty fish, some whole grains, less meat and less processed foods. In addition to good nutrition, a healthier life is a lifestyle with enough sleep, not too much stress, no smoking and enough exercise.
