A panic attack can suddenly happen to you. Or sometimes you may feel it coming. Either way, it’s very annoying and you get completely out of balance and want it to be over as quickly as possible. If you are not at home, you may want to go home as quickly as possible, to your own familiar environment. But if this is not possible, or the travel time is very long, it is nice to have tools that can help you on the spot.
If you suffer from panic attacks, this can also mean that you not leave the house anymore or very little and that you have ‘fear for fear’ or anxiety.
I myself have suffered from panic attacks for years and know how restrictive this can be in your life. n fact, it had such an effect on me that I felt I was losing a part of myself, who I was. Fortunately, this is now a thing of the past.
Based on my own experiences, I like to treat people who still suffer from panic attacks or anxiety and share what helped me or I what I learned later about this.
In addition to gaining insight into what was going on with me, yoga, meditation, breathing exercises and Reiki helped me enormously. was regularly treating myself and receiving treatments.
Regular and alternative treatment for panic attacks
Through your doctor or psychologist you can get medication that can help you. If you don’t want this, or you want to be able to do additional things yourself, there are quite a few things you can do:
- To start with, you could reduce or completely eliminate activators, such as alcohol, nicotine, caffeine, too much sugar and of course drugs. This might be very obvious, but still.
- It is also good to take a closer look at your general lifestyle. Reducing stress is of course very important, but it is not always easy to reduce it simply. Guidance could help you to take a closer look at what you can change and how.
- Breathing exercises can also help you immensely. Incorrect breathing can trigger a panic attack, or perhaps you suffer from chronic hyperventilation.
- Meditation is not for everyone, but it can really give you insight into yourself and help you feel more relaxed in a short period of time.
- A massage is very beneficial and can give you mental relaxation and the ability to relax muscles. In addition, it helps you to come into more contact with your body. This also allows you to notice signals of tension sooner.
- There are various types of relaxation exercises such as a body scan. This is a guided meditation in which you relax parts of your body step by step.
- In yoga, in addition to being physically active, you are also practicing awareness of your body and mind, and relaxation exercises, breathing exercises and meditation are part of a class.
- A walk in nature might also be something that suits you best at the moment.
- And of course Reiki, about which I will tell you more in this blog.
But whatever you choose and do, it is always good to build in moments of rest, reduce stimuli and take time for yourself.
What can Reiki do for you if you suffer from panic attacks or anxiety?
Reiki can be translated as universal life energy and supports and activates your own natural healing process. It works on a physical and mental level.
It is a Japanese healing method based on the principle that energy is transmitted through the laying on of hands. In addition, energy can be transmitted to you remotely if the practitioner has at least level 2 (with Usui system) or is a master.
The cause of a panic attack varies from person to person. And you may not even know what exactly causes it. During a Reiki treatment, you or I are not consciously concerned with what the cause is or what the trigger was, but the Reiki energy goes where it is needed.
Just know that I, or any other Reiki therapist, cannot determine exactly where the energy goes. For example, during a treatment I cannot determine ‘make the panic disappear’, but experience shows that the tension decreases and therefore sometimes disappears immediately.
When I provide treatment, 1 on 1 or remotely, I often get images or certain feelings and sensations. I will feedback this to you and can help you gain more insight and what you can work on.
Reiki distance treatment during a panic attack or anxiety
Distance treatment is ideal, especially if you cannot or do not dare to leave the house during a panic attack or there is no practitioner nearby who can visit you.
With distance treatment we are not physically in the same room, but mentally I am connected to you.
I do not have a 9-5 mentality and also treat people on weekends or evenings, if possible. All you have to do is sit or lie comfortably and quietly during a session. And the best thing is to make sure you are not distracted or interrupted.
What does a Reiki distance treatment entail?
The day and time on which you will receive the treatment will be agreed in advance.
During the session you open yourself mentally to the energy. You can notice something both physically and mentally. But it may also be that you don’t consciously notice something right away. Then trust that the energy is really doing its job. You might even only notice a change later.
During a session your panic, anxiety or tensions may immediately decrease or disappear, but it may also be that your complaints do not disappear immediately but that you just start to feel tired, for example, or even fall asleep.
Sometimes multiple treatments are necessary.
You can read more about how it works on the Reiki distance healing page.
Reiki as support and preventive treatment against panic attacks and anxiety
As you read above, Reiki supports physical healing, as well as mental and spiritual growth. This makes the list of what Reiki can do for you is actually endless.
A reiki session offers relaxation, reduces stress, stimulates the natural functioning of the organs and can provide balance at the hormonal level and a positive effect on the pituitary gland. This can help reduce tension and possibly eliminate panic attacks altogether.
If you use medication, you can combine this very well with Reiki. And of course, a good lifestyle is important and talking can help you enormously. Having panic attacks is not something to be ashamed of! Unfortunately, many people suffer from it and support and understanding from those around you will help you.
How often do I need a Reiki treatment if I suffer from panic attacks or anxiety?
If you have a panic attack, 1 session may help you right away. Depending on your complaints, intensity and frequency of your attacks, it may be a good idea to do several sessions in a row. This is also to work preventively.
You could also take one-on-one treatments when you are not having an attack, and/or take the distance treatments for a longer period of time.
In general, a distance Reiki session lasts around 20-30 minutes. But if during the session I feel that longer is necessary, I will do so, at no additional cost. Before I start a treatment, I need some personal details from you. For more information, please see the Reiki distance healing page.

Since 2017 I am a Reiki master in the tradition of the Usui Ryoho system.
My Reiki Level I course I did in 1997 and in 1998 Reiki level II.
