glass of water with lemon and mint

Add more flavour to your water with fruits, herbs and vegetables

There are many ways to give water just that little bit more flavour with fruit, herbs and/or vegetables.
Whether it is warm or not, a glass of water is good against thirst and good for your body.

But sometimes it can be a bit boring, or you just want a little more flavor in your glass of drinking water.
And that can be done very easily with one or more extra ingredients. These can be fresh, but also dried or from the freezer.
And it is not much work. You put everything together, wait about an hour and it is ready. But you can also prepare it the night before, so that you can take it with you in the morning.

Below you will find some ideas about which fruits, herbs and vegetables you could combine. The ratio is up to you. Some herbs or fruits are a bit stronger in taste than others, such as ginger.
One person may find it slightly tastier or less tasty than another.
The final taste of your drink also depends on how long you let it steep in the water.

So enjoy and experiment.

More ingredients is certainly not always better or tastier.

For a long time I have actually only made combinations of cucumber, lemon, mint and ginger. Simply because those ingredients were mostly available and I always had them in the house. And because it was always just a little bit different, it never got boring because with these 4 ingredients you can already combine a lot.

Perhaps a funny detail: At children’s yoga I initially brought water, fruit juice and flavoured water. The children were allowed to choose and taste what they wanted. And guess what, they wanted flavoured water. Much tastier than fruit juice. And every week they asked me again if I wanted to bring that delicious water next week. Of course.

Tips for making flavoured water:

  1. If you are using harder fruits, such as apples, cut them into thin slices. They need more time to release their flavour.
  2. Fibrous herbs or vegetables such as ginger root, lemongrass and rosemary, are best crushed first, for example with a wooden spoon.
  3. Tear or crush leafy greens such as mint and basil to release their oils.
  4. Add some ice cubes
  5. You can simply put everything, water and ingredients, in a jug and then pour it out. There are also special (bidon-like) bottles with a holder in the middle for your creations. This way, only the water comes out and bits of fruit, vegetables and herbs remain in the bottle. Very handy.
