Sometimes after a day you may feel restless, empty, or completely full. As if emotions, tension, or stimuli have stuck to you. At those moments, a Reiki shower is a gentle way to energetically cleanse yourself and reconnect with yourself.
This visual shower is simple and down-to-earth — no complicated rituals, no spiritual fluff — just clearing out what isn’t yours.
In this blog, you’ll read what a Reiki shower is, why you might take one, and how to do it step by step.
You can also do this shower if you haven’t had any Reiki initiations.
What is a Reiki shower?
A Reiki shower is a short energetic exercise in which you use Reiki energy to cleanse yourself, similar to taking a physical shower. Instead of water, Reiki flows through and around you, allowing tension, negative energy, and emotions that are not yours to be released.
You can take a Reiki shower literally while showering, or as a visualisation — for example while standing or sitting in a quiet place.
Why would you take a Reiki shower?
Every day we are in contact with other people, situations, and emotions. Especially if you are sensitive, give a lot, or do energetic work, you may unknowingly pick up energy from others.
I notice that a Reiki shower helps me to:
- release tension more quickly
- return to my own energy
- calm my mind
- sleep better
- feel less filled with other people’s emotions
A Reiki shower is especially helpful:
- after a busy workday
- after (intense) contact with others
- after an emotional event
- before going to sleep
- after a Reiki treatment or other energetic work
How do you take a Reiki shower?
Stand in a relaxed position with your feet hip-width apart and your knees slightly bent. This can be in the shower, but it doesn’t have to be.
Close your eyes and allow your breathing to settle. Relax your body.
Place your hands in the Gassho position (palms and fingers together at the level of your heart chakra). You may choose to practice the Gassho meditation for a few minutes and, if you like, recite the five Reiki principles.
Welcome Reiki in the way you are used to.
If you have not had any Reiki initiations, welcome universal life energy in a way that feels right to you.
Breathe calmly and feel the energy flowing through your body.
Then bring your hands slightly above your head and separate them, as if forming a bowl. Imagine this bowl filling with soft, loving universal life energy.
When the bowl feels full, open your hands and let the Reiki shower flow over you.
Feel the energy entering through your crown and, if you like, follow the flow with your hands: along your face, neck, and shoulders, your arms, your chest and belly, visualize it flowing over your back, follow the energy along your hips, legs, and feet, down into the earth
Repeat this once or several times until you feel that anything heavy or not yours has been washed away and that you are recharged with energy.
Follow your intuition — it is always leading.
Then bring your hands back to your chest in the Gassho position. Imagine your energy field becoming calm and filled with light.
If it feels right, thank Reiki and/or the universe for the energy.
Take one more deep breath in and out, and gently open your eyes.
How long does a Reiki shower take?
A Reiki shower can be as short or as long as you like. Sometimes one minute is enough; other times you may take five or ten minutes.
Energetic self-care
A Reiki shower is a simple, loving form of self-care. Know that you don’t have to force or analyse anything. You don’t need to know what you are releasing.
Allow yourself to receive and let the energy do the work.
My experience is that the more often I do this, the easier it becomes to let go and stay close to myself. This exercise also reminds me how easily I can unknowingly take on other people’s energy and helps me become more aware when something isn’t mine, but belongs to someone else.
Try it out — without expectations — and see what it does for you.
