The power of energy: why your pet benefits from Reiki

Animals often respond very strongly to energy and energetic therapies, perhaps even more so than humans because they are so connected to their environment.
If you have a pet, you probably recognize those moments when your cat comes to curl up against you when you’re feeling down, or your dog is already waiting at the front door the moment you turn into your street.

Pets have a keen sense of atmosphere and energy. They communicate all day long through their hearts and instincts.

However, it’s not always the case that they come to you exactly when you think you need them. I remember a time when I was sad and started to cry. I immediately thought: “This is a test to see if my dogs feel this and come to comfort me.” After all, that’s what I had seen all over social media!

Well, my dogs just kept on sleeping; maybe one eye opened just a crack. “Really?” I thought, “I need you right now, surely you feel that I’m sad?” They probably did, but the funny thing was that their relaxed reaction made me realize that maybe things weren’t so bad after all. I ended up going to them to pet them. Even that has positive effects on us humans due to the release of oxytocin—the “cuddle hormone.” Your energy, in turn, affects your pet because they feel that unconditional love.

Beyond direct touch, Reiki is a beautiful way to support your animal. Reiki can be translated as “universal life energy,” but you could also simply call it “pure love.”

If your pet suffers from stress, is facing surgery, is in pain, or struggles with separation anxiety or other mental challenges, a Reiki session is ideal for them.

What exactly is Reiki?

Reiki is a Japanese healing method that activates the body’s natural healing process on both a physical and mental level. A treatment promotes relaxation and stress reduction. As a practitioner, I act as a “conduit” for energy, placing my hands on or just above the body. Since I am a Reiki Master, I can also provide these treatments from a distance; we don’t even need to be in the same room.

The practitioner acts as a “conduit” for energy, placing their hands on or above the body of a person or animal. If the practitioner has Reiki Level 2 or is a Master, like me, this treatment can also be given remotely. You don’t need to be in the same room.

You can read more about reiki on the general reiki page at the  Reiki treatment page and one about distance healing treatment.

The benefits of Reiki for your pet:

Reiki always goes where it is needed most. Here are a few examples of what a session can do:

  • Deep Relaxation During Stress: Reiki helps calm the nervous system. This is perfect for animals with separation anxiety, restlessness due to loud noises (fireworks/thunder), or difficulty adjusting to new situations.
  • Relief from Physical Pain: For older animals with ailments like arthritis or stiffness, Reiki can soothe the pain and increase mobility.
  • Support During Recovery: By stimulating the natural flow of energy, the body’s self-healing capacity is activated, often leading to faster healing of wounds and injuries.
  • Processing Emotional Trauma: Reiki can help process negative past experiences, helping the animal regain self-confidence and become more relaxed. It is also very effective during the intensity of rehoming.
  • End-of-Life Support: A session can support both the animal and the owner during the final days. By relieving pain and anxiety, it brings a sense of peace and surrender. Even after passing, a treatment can offer comfort.
  • Strengthening Your Bond: Because you are communicating on a deeper, energetic level, a renewed sense of trust and understanding often grows between you and your pet.

How does an energetic treatment work for animals?

A treatment can be done in two ways: physically or at a distance.
It’s actually similar to how a session with people will be.

Physical Treatment During a session, I place my hands on the animal or hold them just above the body if the animal prefers. An animal is always free to move; they don’t have to sit on a treatment table. They can simply lie on their own mat where they feel safest. If they walk away at some point, that can be a sign that they have received enough for now.

In my experience, animals often start yawning, sighing deeply, or snuggling up against me. With very anxious animals, I start with a distance treatment while in the same room to respect their boundaries. An animal may remain at a distance, and that’s perfectly fine.

Distance Treatment
At an agreed-upon time, I connect with your pet energetically, just as if I were in the room. I’d appreciate receiving a photo of the animal beforehand. See also for more information the Reiki distance healing page.
Owners often notice the same relaxed behavior during a distance session; sometimes the pet simply falls into a deep sleep.

A reiki session is more than a treatment

Just like with humans, a session will never give more energy than is necessary. It goes where it is needed, whether that is physical or mental.

Reiki is actually more than just a treatment that provides balance, peace and support for healing. It is also a way to connect with your pet on a deeper level and further strengthens that special bond you have.

It’s always beautiful to see how strongly animals respond to Reiki. They pick up on energy much faster than we do—perhaps because we are often “in our heads” wondering if it works. Animals don’t have those expectations or prejudices. They simply react intuitively.
